Themswear

I started illustrating menswear outfits as a way to showcase various items for sale at the clothing store Standard & Strange. This project has since evolved into a portraiture exercise. I choose to illustrate each person in a mostly neutral stance, to allow their choice of outfit (and sometimes personally-important accessories) to speak for them. The title of the project comes from the fact that anyone can wear “menswear,” including men, women, and non-binary and trans folks, all of whom I’ve depicted so far. The “menswear” fashion movement is one that tends to be very inclusive of non-binary and masculine-presenting trans folks in particular; this community thus subverts the “traditional” fits and styles resurrected and redesigned in the genre.
