Anatomia

I’ve studied anatomy and physiology as part of my own scientific education and research, and I’ve taught anatomy and physiology at the college level. While most human anatomy teaching props are sculpted from plastic and wax, the details with which they’re rendered make them feel like sacred objects. I’m particularly intrigued by the depiction of faces on replicas with heads; there’s clearly no perfect solution here, as figures without faces would likely feel eerie and impersonal, while modeled faces beg the question of who is being depicted.

Learning human anatomy is often partly reverential and partly grotesque; we learn about ourselves in all our glory and all our corporeal grossness. I aim here to capture some of that uncanny combination through depictions of these useful but often curious teaching tools.
